However, Last Night in Montreal was not without its rough edges which were nowhere in sight with the very polished Station Eleven. Her stories feel very deliberate and very purposeful. In both Station Eleven and Last Night in Montreal, she introduces both interconnected characters as well as meaningful objects that emerge in different ways across time and space. John Mandel writes like a dream, and she has a way of weaving together multiple timelines and points of view in a seamless fashion. At the same time, I was wary– it’s difficult working backwards through an author’s works because I’m constantly comparing the older books to newer, more polished and experienced works. John Mandel’s Station Eleven ( video review), one of my favorite books of 2014, I purchased her other three novels to read when I missed her writing too much. But what he discovers is a deeper mystery, one that will set past and present spinning toward collision.Īfter finishing Emily St. When Lilia goes out for a paper and fails to return to their Brooklyn apartment, he follows her to Montreal, not knowing whether he wants to disappear, too, or help her find her way home. Also, what's the point of being "special" with the rare ability to "damn" if anyone can just easily take it (or copy your power with a touch and then use it themselves?) Which leads me to also wonder.why are scythes so readily available? The reapers have their very own scythe, made just for them. it just got so jangled that it was stupid. The second, with all the jumping and characters, new gifts, new beings, deaths, etc. And honestly, the ending just got stupid. Has it been an hour, a day, or a whole week? With as much jumping from place to place, it's hard to tell the time. There were several times when I thought I may have zoned out during the audiobook and missed a chunk of book. They're in one place, then another, then another, over and over. I didn't like that there was so much jumping around, literally. It's hard to explain without giving spoilers. What I didn't expect was for there to be no moving forward in the story line. Just like book 1, it's left at a cliff hanger and you must buy book 3 to get any closure. I'm now sitting here, wondering how I really feel about it. Hmm, I'm not really sure how I feel about this book. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. In that sense it is child-directed learning. The story may stay the same, but the way they experience changes with each reading. The child feels empowered because they can determine what happens on each page. On one page a little figure will pop up at a window when you touch it, on another page it won't. Watching children interact with the apps is very eye opening. The digital enhancements draw on this desire to actively participate in stories. Children at schools where I read the print version of the Young David Books love to take part in the stories by pretending they have their own catapults to fire at an imaginary hairy beast or giant. My daughter draws pictures when I read to her at bedtime.
